๐ About
Budget lets you set spending limits across categories and track how much you have spent against each. Budget data lives in independent Google Sheets files in your Drive, so you can have separate budgets for different purposes โ e.g. General, Holiday.
๐ Selecting a File
The chip bar below the app bar lists your budget files. Tap a chip to load it. The active file name appears in the title bar.
โ Create a New Budget File
Tap โฎ โ New budget file and enter a name. The file is created in your Google Drive under Budget Tracker โ Budgets.
โ๏ธ Adding a Budget Item
Tap + Add budget. Enter:
- Name โ e.g. "Groceries"
- Spending limit โ the maximum amount for the period
- Start date โ the first day of the first period
- Frequency โ Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly, Quarterly, Yearly, or none (all-time)
- Parent โ optional, makes this a sub-budget of another item
- Tags โ optional labels
The progress bar shows spending within the current period only.
๐ Frequencies
Each budget file has its own set of billing frequencies (Weekly, Monthly, etc.). Tap โฎ โ Manage frequencies to add custom frequencies, edit existing ones, or disable ones you do not need.
๐ธ Tracking Spending Against a Budget
When adding an expense, choose a budget file and Budget item to link it. The budget screen shows a progress bar for each item comparing actual spend in the current period to the limit.
- Green = under budget
- Orange = approaching limit
- Red = over budget
๐ Sub-Budgets
Budget items can be nested. A parent budget's progress bar rolls up the spend of all its children โ set an overall "Utilities" limit with individual sub-items for electricity, gas, and internet. Tap the expand/collapse arrow on a parent card to show or hide its children.
๐ Budget Detail
Tap a budget card to open its detail view: the progress card, a list of its sub-budgets, and every expense allocated to it (the full history, not just the current period).
๐ Timeline View
Tap the timeline icon on a budget card to see spending versus budget across time. Choose a date range and a view frequency (weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly); each period shows Budget / Spent / Remaining with a progress bar. Pick "All budgets" to see the aggregate across every item.
๐ฑ Amount Overrides
Open a budget item and tap Add override to change the spending limit for a specific period or from a specific period onwards. Useful for seasonal budgets or one-off changes without editing the base amount.
๐ค Adding a Shared Budget File
Tap โฎ โ Add shared file, paste the Google Sheets URL or file ID, and confirm the name. The file will appear alongside your own files.
